A patent is an official document given to an inventor by the Patent Office of the country in which a patent application is filed. This document gives the inventor the right to stop anyone else from copying, using, distributing or selling the invention without his permission.
An invention is a new product or process that solves a technical problem. This is different from a discovery, which is something that already existed but had not been found.

Patents in India are governed by the Patent Act, 1970.
Registering Authority: Patent Office
1. Exclusive right to use the patent.
2. The right to obtain relief in respect of infringement of the Patent in the manner provided in the Patent Act 1970.
3. Patent Registration is a prima-facie proof of proprietorship in the Court of Law.
Any person claiming to be the first inventor or proprietor of the Patent and desirous of registering it may apply for Patent registration.
1. Once Registration is granted it is valid for two years from the date of filing the application.
2. After the expiry of the first two years the registration may be renewed annually for a total of 20 yrs.
