Geographical Indication means an indication which identifies goods as originating, or manufactured in a particular place where a given quality, reputation or other characteristics of such goods is essentially attributable to its geographical origin.
Indication of geographical origin – a geographical indication should be indicative of the source of origin of the respective goods i.e. be able to indicate the geographical territory of a country, or a region or locality where the goods are grown or manufactured.
Geographical indications in India are governed by the Geographical Indication of Goods Act, 1999.
Registering Authority: Geographical Indication Registry.
1. It confers legal protection to Geographical Indications in India.
2. Prevents unauthorized use of a Registered Geographical Indication by others.
3. It provides legal protection to India Geographical Indications which in turn boosts exports.
4. It promotes economic prosperity of producers of goods produced in a Geographical territory.

2. Any association of producers
3. Any organization
4. Any authority
Representing the interest of the producers of the concerned goods, who are desirous of registering a geographical indication in relation to respective goods.
A person dealing with the following three categories of goods is termed as a producer, and may apply for registration as an authorised user:
1. Production, processing, trading or dealing of Agricultural goods.
2. Exploitation, trading and dealing of Natural goods.
3. Making, manufacturing, trading or dealing in Handicraft or Industrial goods.
The registration of an authorized user shall be initially for a period of ten years, or for the period till the date on which the registration of the geographical indication in respect of which the authorized user is registered expires, which ever is earlier.
